Hazardous Materials Survey

Surveying for hazardous and environmentally sensitive materials in buildings and other structures and in soil is an important component in the GETEX suite of consulting, project management, inspection, supervision and measurement services. The services supplied by GETEX are tailored to meet each individual situation. Generally, surveys are undertaken during normal working hours however all our services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Typically in buildings, the materials surveyed include asbestos, lead based paint, lead in dust, synthetic mineral fibres (SMF) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s). These materials may present serious health, safety and/or environmental problems. If high lead levels are found soil sampling for lead may also be required. State and national legislation, guidelines and codes place obligations on building owners, property managers and occupiers to ensure the identification of and the appropriate management and disposal of these materials.

The Survey

Experienced professionally qualified consultants undertake a thorough inspection of the building and take samples for analysis where appropriate. Frequently particularly if the building is occupied you will require that the survey be as discreet and non-invasive as possible. Our consultants are well aware of such sensitivities and will perform their inspection accordingly. Surveys can be conducted out of normal business hours if required.

GETEX are also experienced in the undertaking of below-ground surveys requiring the direction of excavators, locators and surveyors, typically for the presence of asbestos containing materials.

Surveys may require the analysis of samples to confirm identity and to determine concentration.

The Report

The report will meet the requirements of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC). It can be made available in both electronic and hard copy, the format will depend on your particular requirements. A detailed report generally has an Executive Summary, Scope as agreed between yourself and GETEX, Inspection Details, Sample Analysis, and a final section Conclusions and Recommendations. A simpler list-of-occurances stlye format is also available. Clients with a number of buildings or large complex buildings find our database type report helpful for ongoing managements/control purposes.
