Be Safe Around Lead in Homes and Gardens
In August the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) reminded the NSW residents and in particular, those of Wollongong to be mindful of the risks to lead and other heavy metal contaminants that may be found on their property from a range of historical sources, especially when renovating and gardening.
The reminder follows the publication of a comprehensive study examining historical heavy contamination issues (in particular lead) within the Wollongong LGA.
The literature review of the levels of lead and other heavy metals in soil and roof dust in Wollongong and measures to manage any associated health risks examines legacy contamination issues and recommends further testing, including of soil to provide more site-specific data.
“The presence of lead and heavy metals around your home may be well known to some residents and new to others but there are simple steps that can be taken to prevent or minimise exposure,” said by a spokesman of the EPA.
Severely Flaking Lead Based Paint
Residents can have areas of their home or even the soil tested for possible lead and heavy metal contamination for prior to any renovation works or peace of mind reasons as New South Wales moves to a more work-from-home and home-based lifestyle in this current climate.
